A dental restoration is a type of dental treatment used to restore the function and appearance of a damaged or decayed tooth. There are many types of restorative dental treatment. These can range from simple procedures, such as fillings, to more complex treatments, such as dental implants. Whatever your oral health needs, your Town of Mount Royal dentist is here to help you have the smile you've always wanted!
The different types of dental restoration
There are many types of dental restoration available to patients today. Depending on the extent of damage caused by tooth decay, fracture or oral disease, different types of treatment can be offered. Here are the main ones:
- Filling : a filling, also known as a filling, aims to restore a tooth affected by tooth decay that has been partially destroyed. Made of composite (white in color) or amalgam (metallic in color), the filling aims to fill the empty space left in the tooth once the dentist has removed the diseased part of the tooth.
- Inlaying : inlaying aims to restore a larger part of a tooth, particularly in the case of deep decay. It is used when a dental crown is not desired.
- The dental crown : this prosthetic tooth is empty on the inside. It is installed over a tooth that is badly damaged or deformed. The dentist must first remove part of the tooth to create enough space to receive the crown. The crown can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic using CEREC technology.
- The dental implant : an implant is a small titanium screw inserted directly into the jawbone during surgery. Once the dental implant has healed, it acts as an artificial tooth root. It can then be topped with a crown to replace a missing tooth, but multiple implants can also be installed and topped with a bridge or prosthesis to replace several teeth, or even all of them.
The aims of dental restoration
As we've seen, a dental restoration can take many different forms. However, in the majority of cases, treatment is aimed at specific objectives, which are as follows:
- Solidify the tooth: when a tooth is damaged by decay or following trauma, it becomes less solid and is at greater risk of further decay. Restoration helps solidify it.
- Restore its appearance : restoration restores a natural, uniform appearance to the tooth, as well as to the smile as a whole.
- Restore or maintain its functions : restoration helps prevent a tooth from becoming further damaged, being extracted, or falling out. So it allows it to continue fulfilling its functions for chewing and speaking.
- Replace the tooth: in the case of dental implants, their installation ultimately allows a missing tooth to be completely replaced.
