Invisible orthodontic treatments have become very popular. This is undoubtedly due to the benefits that these treatments, like Invisalign, provide to patients. The Prisma Dentistes team can tell you more about the benefits of Invisalign treatment, offered at our Town of Mount Royal dental clinic.
Invisalign: a brief look at how the treatment works
Invisalign treatment is based on the use of transparent, removable aligners. It's an evolutionary treatment, meaning that the teeth gradually move into the position planned at the start of treatment, until better aligned teeth are achieved.
To achieve this, we first take digital impressions of the dentition, which are used to design the aligners. A smile simulation is also made, so that the patient can observe the changes that will occur during treatment and see the final result in terms of smile alignment. The aligners are then refitted. Each aligner is worn for about 2 weeks, before being replaced by a new set of aligners adapted to the dental displacements previously achieved. After a few months, the result is better aligned teeth and a healthier smile.
During treatment, the aligners are worn 22-23 hours a day. They are removed only for meals or for oral hygiene routine.
Benefits for the patient
Concretely for those undergoing an Invisalign treatment, the following benefits are generally enjoyed, when compared to traditional orthodontics:
- Better oral hygiene: since the aligners are removable, the patient can remove them for flossing and tooth brushing. Hygiene habits are not hampered by wearing a fixed appliance.
- Lack of dietary restrictions: the aligners are removed during meals, so you can eat what you like and face no restrictions on eating.
- Comfort: customized aligners are designed in smooth plastic and fit perfectly over the dentition. So there's no risk of rubbing or discomfort, as is sometimes the case with fixed, metal braces.
- A high degree of discretion: the aligners are transparent and almost invisible when worn. This means that orthodontic treatment can be carried out discreetly.
- Treatment time: Invisalign generally reduces treatment time compared with traditional orthodontics. Similar results can be achieved with less treatment time.
How do I know if Invisalign is right for me?
Invisalign can correct tooth alignment problems, such as overlaps due to lack of space or, in the opposite case, to reduce overly pronounced interdental spaces. This treatment can also correct occlusion problems, i.e. an unbalanced relationship between the two jaws (e.g. underbite, overbite or crossbite).
Of course, every person is different, which is why a complete examination of the teeth and jaws should be carried out before considering Invisalign treatment.
