Since Invisalign orthodontics has been steadily gaining in popularity in recent years, our patients often ask us about it. Our team has therefore decided to prepare this article to answer 3 frequently asked questions about this treatment.
How does Invisalign treatment work?
Invisalign is based on the use of a series of clear, removable aligners. It's an evolutionary treatment; each set of aligners is worn for around 2 weeks, before being changed for the next aligners. This allows the teeth to be gradually moved to correct problems of tooth alignment and occlusion.
Treatment planning and tray design are carried out in the clinic under the supervision of the dentist. These steps are assisted by state-of-the-art technology. Here's how it all works:
- First, a consultation is held with the patient, during which his or her orthodontic needs are ascertained through an examination and x-rays. This is also an opportunity to discuss expectations and budget.
- Digital impressions of the dentition are taken by simply scanning the teeth with a scanner. This enables the treatment steps to be planned and the aligners to be designed.
- The models of the aligners are sent to the Invisalign laboratory, where they are manufactured.
- A few days later, the patient receives the aligners during a second clinic visit, and the treatment steps are explained.
- The aligners must be worn throughout the day and at night, except during meals and oral hygiene routine.
An Invisalign treatment usually lasts 9 to 12 months. This duration is approximate and obviously depends on the problem you wish to treat and its severity.
Is it really effective?
YES! Invisalign can be used to treat a large proportion of orthodontic problems: overlapping, incorrect positioning of certain teeth, excessively pronounced spacing between teeth, as well as occlusion problems (the relationship between upper and lower teeth). What's more, it's now possible to treat children, teenagers, adults and even older people who want a healthy, beautiful smile.
Orthodontics not only improves the appearance of the smile, but also generally promotes its health. Straight, well-positioned teeth are easier to clean, which helps prevent disease. Jaw health is also improved in cases of malocclusion.
The Invisalign treatment presents concrete benefits for the patient. Because the aligners are transparent, they are barely noticeable when placed on the teeth. What's more, since the aligners are removable, it avoids having to change eating habits, as well as those related to oral hygiene.
What are the rules to follow during an Invisalign treatment?
During an Invisalign treatment, the most important thing is to wear the aligners for as long as possible - around 22 hours a day. As mentioned above, however, they can be removed during meals, for hygiene routines, and when playing certain sports.
Hygiene habits do not need to be modified, as flossing and brushing can be done as normal. This should be done after meals, i.e. before replacing the aligners.
