Enamel is the protective layer of the dentition. For this reason, when it degrades due to high exposure to acids inside the mouth, it can result in various consequences for dental health. We cover this problem in the following article and share tips on how to prevent tooth enamel erosion.
What is tooth enamel?
Enamel is the outer layer of teeth, which is naturally white in color. Although enamel is the hardest part of the human body, it is still exposed to damage. It can crack or fracture as a result of dental trauma, but it can also wear away.
Enamel wear occurs when the dentition is exposed to high levels of acidity. Enamel gradually erodes and loses its protective qualities for the underlying layers of the dentition. Dentin then becomes more exposed, and teeth are more vulnerable to bacterial attack, and thus to the formation of dental caries.
Factors that cause enamel erosion:
- High consumption of acidic foods and drinks, especially if this is frequent and prolonged;
- High consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Bacteria then feed on the sugary residues and produce acids;
- Inadequate production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva effectively neutralizes acids in the mouth;
- An overly aggressive brushing technique or the use of a toothbrush with bristles that are too hard;
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux or frequent vomiting.
It's important to understand that all these factors together increase the level of acidity inside the mouth. The acids then generate the progressive erosion of tooth enamel.
How to recognize enamel erosion?
When enamel wears away, certain signs and symptoms may become apparent, the main ones being:
- Teeth take on a more yellowish appearance, as dentin becomes more visible beneath the thinning enamel;
- The edges of incisors (sharp front teeth) may appear transparent;
- Teeth may become hypersensitive, as dentin becomes more exposed. The latter contains tubules that reach the center of the tooth where the nerve endings are located;
- Teeth may crack or fracture more easily.
Tips to prevent enamel erosion
By being aware of the factors that cause enamel erosion, it's easier to apply the right daily gestures to prevent this problem. Here's what our dentists have to say:
- Adopt a good technique for brushing teeth, using a toothbrush that has soft bristles;
- Limit consumption of sugary and/or acidic beverages and foods;
- Consume these foods at the end of meals, as the amount of saliva in the mouth is then high, which helps neutralize bacteria and acids ;
- Rinse your mouth well after a meal or snack when you don't have access to a toothbrush;
- Talk to your dentist or doctor to prevent dry mouth;
- Adopt good oral hygiene habits (brushing, flossing, regular visits to the dentist).
